Photos 4 Space 2

1. Flat Space

This is an example of flat space. What helps to make something look flat is the use of the zoom, and that’s what I did with my phone camera. This is my neighbor’s stone wall. I see it everyday when I back out of my driveway. It wasn’t until recently did I realize how beautifully built it is. Though I’m not a contractor or builder, I find there is art surrounding this construction. It amazes me how the builders were able to insert all of these differently-sized stones together to form a partition. I love the seemingly simple yellow and white meshed together. My intention in this photo was to show beauty within simplicity and function. I feel this is a successful example of flat space. None of the major depth cues exist, including convergence and/or size change.

2. Limited Space

I believe this to be an example of limited space, because there are objects in the foreground and middle ground (or background), which denotes it is not only flat space. There are two frontal planes. There is no appearance of convergence or longitudinal lines. I took this photo because it displays two of my favorite portraits, painted by my mother-in-law. They both incorporate water or the sea, which I look fascinating to me when put into a painting. I believe this is a successful example of limited space, because one object is in focus, whereas the other is in soft focus. Yet, there is still an understanding of somewhat deep space within the photo.

3. Contrast of Flat and Deep in One Image

This is an example of both flat and deep space in one image, which creates a contrast. I was drawn to take this photo, because it includes my wife’s childhood tree and swing. The house is located off a main road. The converging lines and vanishing points of the sidewalk and crosswalk indicate deep space. I suppose that this is a contrast of how we feel when we are at home, because we live next to a frequently used road. We feel safe (flat) while on the property and we observe possible danger (deep) as we look down the road from our yard. I like to think this is a successful capture of contrast between deep and flat space. The giant tree feels up close, while the sidewalk and road clearly exist deeper/farther away in the frame.

  1. Hey Kevin, Nice images! I like the limited in your second photo. Also, nice arrangement of the pictures in that image: putting the lighter tones painting at the back and darker tones in the FG helps create some deep space, but then the crushing it by throwing the BG out of focus. For your first photo, maybe moving the camera right or left just to simplify some of the details or maybe finding some balance in the wall would help emphasize your theme of finding simplicity in that image. Also, cropping a little of the sidewalk in the bottom, right corner would help too. Don’t be afraid to edit a photo in post after you capture it to make it even better and the message clearer!!
